How the Increase Is Calculated

Since 2022, Ontario ties the minimum wage to inflation. Each year the government multiplies the current rate by the change in the Ontario Consumer Price Index for the previous calendar year, then rounds to the nearest five cents. The new rate takes effect every October 1.

Current rate $17.60
× Ontario CPI change (~1.9%) + $0.334
Rounded to nearest $0.05 $17.95

Your Rights at Minimum Wage

It is a legal floor
No employer can pay you less than the minimum wage for your category — any agreement to work for less is not enforceable.
Overtime still applies
Most employees earn 1.5× their regular rate after 44 hours in a week, calculated on their actual wage, not the minimum.
Tips are on top
Tips and gratuities belong to you and cannot be used to bring your pay down to minimum wage. Servers earn at least the general rate plus tips.
Public holiday pay
You are entitled to public holiday pay and, in most cases, vacation pay of at least 4% — on top of your hourly wage.

If you're paid below minimum wage, you can file a claim with the Ontario Ministry of Labour. Claims can generally recover unpaid wages going back up to two years.
