The moving expenses deduction, and the 40 km test
Canada allows a moving expenses deduction if you moved to work, run a business, or attend post-secondary full time — and your new home is at least 40 kilometres closer to the new work or school location than your old one was. The distance is measured by the shortest normal route, and this test is what most failed claims turn on.
When it applies the deduction is broad: transportation and storage, travel including meals and accommodation en route, temporary living costs for up to 15 days, lease cancellation, and costs of selling the old home including real estate commission and legal fees. If the old home did not sell, up to $5,000 of carrying costs may qualify.
Two limits. It can only be deducted against income earned at the new location, though unused amounts carry forward to the following year. And it is a commonly reviewed claim — keep every receipt. You may use either the detailed or simplified method for vehicle and meal costs; the simplified method needs no receipts for those specific items but still requires a distance and travel record.
Insurance: per pound, not per item
The basic liability included in a moving quote is typically calculated by weight, which produces perverse results: a heavy old sofa is "worth" more than a light laptop. If a mover damages a $2,000 television weighing 15 kg, basic coverage may pay a fraction of replacement cost.
Ask what replacement-value protection costs — it is often modest relative to what it covers. Check first whether your home insurance already extends to goods in transit, since many policies do. Photograph valuable items before packing and note existing damage; claims are far easier to substantiate with dated photos, and the burden of proof sits with you.
Reading a quote properly
- Binding or non-binding? A non-binding estimate can rise on moving day. A binding quote holds unless you change the inventory.
- Was it based on a real survey? In-home or video. Phone estimates are guesses and are where disputes begin.
- Local is hourly; long-distance is weight or volume plus distance. Inventory accuracy matters far more on the latter.
- Are stairs, long carries and elevator time extra? Usually yes, beyond a threshold.
- Is there a large cash deposit? This is the most common feature of moving scams, where goods are held hostage against an inflated final bill.
Verify the company has a real physical address, and for interprovincial moves confirm it is properly licensed and insured. Get three written quotes — the spread is often 40% or more for identical work.
Timing is the biggest lever on price
Roughly half of Canadian moves happen between May and September, and the last weekend of the month is the busiest slot because most leases turn over on the 1st. A mid-week move in February can cost 20–30% less than the identical move on the last Saturday of July.
If your dates have any flexibility, that flexibility is worth more than any negotiation. Book six to eight weeks ahead for a summer move.
