How Movers Actually Price a Job
◆
Local = hourly
You pay for the truck plus crew by the hour, from the moment they arrive until the last box is off the truck. Travel time to and from the depot is usually billed too.
◆
Long-distance = weight × distance
Your shipment is weighed, and the cost is a rate per pound (or per cubic foot) multiplied by the distance. This is why decluttering before a long move saves real money.
◆
Accessorial charges
Stairs, long carries from truck to door, elevators, bulky items (pianos, safes), packing services, and shuttle trucks for tight streets all add line-item fees.
◆
Peak-season premium
Summer, month-end, and the first/last few days of any month are peak. Quotes can be 20–30% higher than a mid-month, mid-week winter move.

Claiming Moving Costs on Your Taxes (CRA)
The 40 km rule: You can deduct eligible moving expenses if your new home is at least 40 kilometres closer to a new job, business, or post-secondary school. Use CRA Form T1-M.
The deduction can only be claimed against income you earn at the new location (employment or self-employment income, or scholarship/research grant income for students). If your eligible expenses exceed that income in the year, you can carry the unused portion forward.

How to Cut Your Moving Bill
1
Get 3 written quotes
Prices vary wildly. Insist on an in-home or video survey for long-distance moves so the estimate is binding, not a lowball that balloons on moving day.
2
Move off-peak
Avoid summer, month-end, and weekends. A mid-week, mid-month winter move can save 20–30%.
3
Declutter first
On a weight-based long-distance move, every box you don't bring is money saved. Sell, donate, or toss before the movers weigh your shipment.
4
Check the company is legit
Confirm the mover is insured, has a real address, and has reviews. For interprovincial moves, verify their valuation coverage and get everything in writing.
