What Is an IP Address?
An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical label assigned to every device connected to the internet — your device's postal address online. Most home users have a dynamic IP assigned by their ISP that can change periodically. Businesses typically use static IPs that stay fixed.
There are two versions: IPv4 (e.g., 192.168.1.1 — the traditional 32-bit format, running out of addresses) and IPv6 (e.g., 2001:0db8::1 — the newer 128-bit standard with effectively unlimited addresses). Most modern networks support both.
Every website you visit can see your IP. It's used for fraud detection, geo-blocking (regional Netflix libraries), rate limiting, and security logging. A VPN masks your real IP with the VPN server's address — which is why VPN users often appear to be in a different country.
Frequently Asked Questions
See your approximate location and ISP. They cannot access your device, determine your exact address, or identify you without involving your ISP and legal process.
Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to route your traffic through a server in another location, masking your real IP from websites and services you visit.
IP geolocation uses ISP registration data, not GPS. It's approximate — typically accurate at country level, often accurate at city level, but can be off by one or two cities.
